Why do energy prices change?

Your pricing questions answered.

Comparing ActewAGL electricity and gas pricing plans

Every year, energy retailers review their electricity and gas prices and inform customers of changes. These changes usually come into effect around July.

ActewAGL and our predecessors* have been committed to the Canberra region for over 100 years and recognise our responsibility to the people who live here. Like always, we’re dedicated to providing transparent information and expert energy advice, by a team of locals who live here too.

Here’s what you need to know about energy prices, and how we can support you to better manage your bill.

  • The Independent Competition and Regulatory Commission (ICRC) regulates ActewAGL’s standing offer prices based on the changing costs which make up an electricity bill. The ICRC has announced its pricing determination to apply from 1 July 2023.

ActewAGL’s ACT electricity prices will increase on average by 4.15% for residential and small business customers.

Full details of the ICRC decision can be found here.

  • ActewAGL’s gas prices in the ACT will increase on average by around 14% from 1 July 2023.

What does this mean for customers?

    • A typical ACT residential household using 35 GJ per year will see an increase of approximately $4 per week.

  • Electricity prices will change for NSW residential and small business customers in line with the Default Market Offer (DMO), as determined by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER).

The price will change on 1 July 2023.

    Essential Energy region

Residential customers (without controlled load) in the Essential Energy region will see prices increase by around 21%. These changes will increase a typical bill by approximately $435 per year.

    Endeavour Energy region

Residential customers (without controlled load) in the Endeavour Energy region will see prices increase by around 21%. These changes will increase a typical bill by approximately $392 per year.

Full details of the AER determination (including small business price changes) can be found here.

  • From 1 July 2023, there will be a change to ActewAGL’s gas prices in NSW. The price change ranges from a 10% to a 17% increase, depending on the region in which you live and the plan you are on. Please check your account details for more information on the changes relevant to you.
