Support carbon-cutting projects at home,
and around the world.

When you choose our Carbon Neutral Gas option, you’ll be building demand for greener gas, while directly making a difference locally and globally. ActewAGL has invested in environmental initiatives that go beyond carbon savings to actually change lives.

In the ACT we support the Mugga Lane Landfill Gas project which captures and processes landfill gas and transforms it into useable, renewable electricity. We also support the Darling River Eco-Corridor carbon project, covering over 150,000 hectares of land. The project aims to protect and regenerate forest on properties supporting a unique and fragile ecosystem.

Further afield, our water purification project in rural Cambodia works towards generating clean drinking water for 1.7 million people across 312,000 Cambodian households over seven years.

We are Climate Active certified.

Our Carbon Neutral Gas opt-in product is accredited by Climate Active. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions and purchasing eligible carbon offset units from several projects, ActewAGL Retail has also achieved carbon neutrality in its business operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We created our Carbon Neutral Gas opt-in product to give you the ability to reduce your household or business greenhouse emissions and contribute to community Net Zero goals. When you choose our Carbon Neutral Gas option, you’ll be building demand for cleaner gas while directly making a difference by supporting our environmental initiatives at home and abroad.

  • Accredited by Climate Active, our Carbon Neutral Gas lets you offset the carbon emissions from your gas usage. For a small extra fee on your regular gas bill, emissions from the gas you fuel your home or business with are balanced by our carbon offset projects and initiatives.

  • Offsetting your carbon emissions with our Carbon Neutral Gas option is $1.50* per week on top of your regular gas bill for residential households, or $0.00195 per MJ for business gas customers.

  • When homes or businesses use energy that comes from non-renewable sources like gas and coal, they release carbon dioxide emissions. Higher levels of CO2 released into the earth’s atmosphere accelerate the greenhouse effect, causing the global temperature to rise.

  • ActewAGL has invested in initiatives that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

    Local
The Mugga Lane Landfill project in the ACT, which transforms waste into electricity. Methane gas released by decomposing landfill is captured to power four biogas-fuelled generators. These generators then contribute energy back to the national grid.

    National
The Darling River Eco-Corridor carbon project covers over 150,000 hectares of rural land throughout North-Western New South Wales and South West Queensland. The projects aim to protect and regenerate forest on properties supporting a unique and fragile ecosystem. Forests are encouraged to regenerate from in-situ seed sources and are assisted by changes in management activities including managing stocking rates, removal or reduction of forest suppression activities and controlling feral animal populations.

    Global
Water purification project in rural Cambodia, which involves the treatment of contaminated water through filtration, avoiding pollution from wood burning or other non-renewable energy sources. The project will work towards generating clean drinking water to 1.7 million people across 312,000 households over seven years.

Cleaner cook stoves in Peru - Improved Cookstoves Diffusion Programme in Peru coordinates the distribution of lifesaving cookstoves. The improved cookstoves replace three stone or a terracotta stove and are constructed with local material by local people. Each new stove sold emits less greenhouse gas emissions compared to the original stove, helping to bring down global emissions. The project helps vulnerable families in rural regions gain access to energy and cooking solutions that are better for their health, cheaper to run and require less firewood. To date, the program has reduced almost 2 million tonnes of CO2.

  • We’re a carbon neutral organisation, certified by Climate Active, and are committed to supporting you through the transition to Net Zero emissions.

To help homes become more energy efficient, we’ve opened the Solarhub & ActewAGL Smart Energy Hub which provides energy efficient solutions such as solar, appliances and EV chargers.

Our Greenchoice program enables you to contribute to the purchase of renewable electricity from government-accredited sources, including wind power, biomass, hydro and solar.

To lower the ACT’s transport emissions, our Electric Vehicle Hub helps you find, finance and charge an EV.
