ENERGY BILL
Watch out for "energy vampires"
Look around and you will see them everywhere in your home, "energy vampires", devices that enter sleep mode when not in use but unknowingly drain power. Televisions, modems, coffee machines, air conditioners and microwaves are just some of the household appliances that feature a standby function which uses power even when not in use.
According to the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, stand by energy consumption is costing $860 million to Australian consumers annually and contributing to $2.6 million tonnes of carbon-dioxide emissions.
Make a habit of switching off everything that is in standby mode when note in use. Unplugging electronics when not in use is a great way to save energy especially entertainment systems, be they consoles, TV or cable boxes which all use power in standby mode.
