ENERGY USE
Keep your fridge
at an optimal
temperature to save.
Keeping your fridge at optimal temperatures will help keep your food safe and your energy bills low.
The Australian Standard for fridges recommends the fresh food compartment be kept at 3°C helps to keep food fresh while minimising energy consumption. A freezer should be kept at -18°C to keep food frozen and manage energy use.
Any higher and the compressors must work harder to maintain the desired temperature, resulting in increased energy usage and higher electricity bills. Any lower and the appliances will consume more energy than necessary to maintain an excessively low temperature.
According to CHOICE magazine, you may find your freezer gets warmer – not colder as you might expect – during the winter months. It's a good idea to keep an eye on temperatures using a fridge/freezer thermometer, particularly in the height of winter and summer.
