ActewAGL community grant recipient Yerrabi Yurwang unveils new community garden

17 March 2025

ActewAGL celebrated the unveiling of Yerrabi Yurwang Child & Family Aboriginal Corporation’s new Bush Tucker Sensory Garden at Yarramundi Cultural Centre on 15 March 2025. This project, made possible through the support of ActewAGL’s Community Grants Program, is a significant milestone in fostering cultural preservation, education and community connection.

The newly made garden beds were unveiled at Yerrabi Yurwang’s annual Yuma Day, with community members invited to take part in planting various native species. Kamilaroi man and Aboriginal native plant specialist, Aaron Chatfield, was engaged under the grant to provide advice on appropriate selection of native plants. Prior to planting, Aaron Chatfield also provided valuable education to the community, explaining the various traditional plant uses, including bush tucker and medicinal applications.

Involving the community in the planting offered a unique sensory experience and cultural learning opportunity for participants. Chief Executive Officer of Yerrabi Yurwang, Dea Delaney-Thiele said, “this initiative builds on Yerrabi Yurwang’s dedication to strengthening the cultural presence of the Aboriginal Community in northern Canberra.”

The ActewAGL grant also provided funds for a new Yarning Circle Pit, a culturally appropriate space designed for storytelling, learning, and strengthening social connections on Country. The Yarning Circle recently received the go ahead for construction to commence and will serve as a gathering place for the Aboriginal community while also being open to the broader community on weekends to encourage cultural understanding and inclusivity.

ActewAGL Retail General Manager, Rachael Turner, expressed pride in supporting this initiative. “At ActewAGL, we are committed to empowering local communities and fostering opportunities for social and cultural connection. We are thrilled to see this project come to life, as it provides a meaningful space for cultural celebration, learning and engagement.”

Since its inception in 2019, Yerrabi Yurwang has launched vital community programs and support services, further reinforcing its role as a trusted cultural facilitator.
