ActewAGL hands over the reins of the Hydrogen Refuelling Station to Pacific Energy.

02 April 2024

In mid-2023, ActewAGL ran a competitive expression of interest (EOI) process to find a new owner and operator for the ActewAGL Hydrogen Refuelling Station (HRS) in Fyshwick, ACT.

The process was well supported, with interest from parties at various stages of their hydrogen journey and ranging in size from hydrogen startups to multinationals.

Pacific Energy, an Australian market leader in the provision of sustainable distributed energy, was the successful party, and handover of the HRS occurred on 1 April 2024.

ActewAGL Chief Executive Officer, John Knox, says “The opening of the ActewAGL Hydrogen Refuelling Station in March 2021, the first publicly available HRS in Australia, demonstrated our commitment to exploring the potential role of green hydrogen in supporting the transition to net-zero emissions in our community.

“We have been at the forefront of the production of hydrogen for the purpose of refuelling passenger vehicles, and have gained insights and knowledge from the experience, that we are proud to have been able to share both nationally and internationally.

“ActewAGL from the outset did not see itself as the long-term owner and operator of the station. The next part of the HRS journey will be very well supported by Pacific Energy, a company dedicated to continuing its operation and further advancing hydrogen and clean energy solutions.”

Having operated for over 40 years, Pacific Energy is a trusted partner at the forefront of clean energy solutions and the latest technology.

This handover provides a level of service continuity, with ENGV, a subsidiary of Pacific Energy, having been the primary construction subcontractor and more recently the maintenance subcontractor for the HRS.

Pacific Energy Chief Executive Officer, Jamie Cullen, says “After originally delivering the Canberra station to ActewAGL three years ago through our specialist subsidiary, ENGV, Pacific Energy is delighted to now take on direct ownership and operating responsibility of this important piece of infrastructure and continue to support the hydrogen vehicles of ActewAGL, the ACT Government and other local users.”

Furthermore, Pacific Energy is developing a vision for hydrogen in the ACT, through its recently announced MOU with Ampol, Hyundai and Toyota.

ActewAGL and Pacific Energy look forward to continuing their relationship, with ActewAGL a customer of the HRS alongside the ACT Government and industry.
